One reason for the shift is demographic pressure. China’s birth rate has dropped sharply in recent years, and the population is aging faster than expected. The number of working-age people is already declining, while wages and labor costs continue to rise. Officials believe automation and digital technology can help offset these trends by boosting efficiency and productivity.
Artificial intelligence is expected to be widely integrated into sectors including manufacturing, logistics, transportation, healthcare, and energy management. AI systems could help companies analyze data, automate routine work, and streamline complex operations.
Robotics is another major pillar of the strategy. China already has the world’s largest number of industrial robots operating in factories. These machines perform tasks such as welding, assembling parts, and moving materials along production lines.
Companies are now racing to develop more advanced humanoid robots capable of performing jobs traditionally handled by people. Several models are already being tested in factories and warehouses. Some electric vehicle manufacturers have introduced humanoid robots to assist with assembly and product inspections. Analysts estimate that over 100 Chinese companies are currently developing humanoid robots, and production is expected to expand in the coming years.
Beyond robotics, China is investing heavily in other emerging AI-related technologies. These include quantum computing, next-generation communications such as 6G networks, brain-computer interfaces, and low-altitude transportation systems, including drones and flying vehicles.
The government is also encouraging open-source AI development, allowing programmers to download and modify models to accelerate innovation and adoption.
Officials say the broader goal is to build what they describe as new high-value productive forces. If the strategy succeeds, China’s rapid progress in AI and robotics could reshape industries worldwide and set a precedent on how these technologies will transform the future of work.
