In most
Western countries, you have to tip waiters and waitresses at restaurants.
People have different opinions about tipping. Some
people think it is necessary, while others think
it is not necessary. Recently, a Korean girl named Mira visited New York
with her parents to meet her aunt. Here, she is having dinner at a
restaurant with her aunt and her parents.
Aunt:
Is everything OK, Mira? Are you enjoying your food?
Mira: Yes! Everything is delicious here.
Thank you!
Aunt: I¡¯m happy to hear that. Do you
need anything else?
Mira: Hmm¡¦ I think I need more water.
I¡¯m thirsty.
Aunt: Then, why don¡¯t you ask the waitress
to bring some water for you?
Mira: OK. I think waiters and waitresses
in New York are very kind. They always smile!
Aunt: Yes, they are very kind. That¡¯s
why we tip them. They provide good service and
make our mealtime very comfortable and pleasant.
Mira: I¡¯m not familiar with tipping culture. In Korea,
we don¡¯t need to tip waiters and waitresses at restaurants.
Aunt: In America, we need to tip service
workers such as taxi drivers, pizza
delivery men, and even hair dressers.
Mira: Phew! I didn¡¯t know that. I guess
living in America costs a lot of money! How
much do I need to tip the waitress?
Aunt: Usually, we tip a waiter or waitress
about 15 to 20 percent of the bill.
Mira: Do you think tipping is really
necessary?
Aunt: Yes, I think it improves the quality of service. Do you
think tipping culture is also necessary in Korea, Mira?
Mira: I¡¯m not really sure. I will think
about that carefully. |
