Is It OK to Sleep with a Pet?
Untitled Document
Today many people all around the world keep pets at home. Many Korean households also keep pet dogs or cats, too. In fact, one in five households keeps pets in Korea. Most pet owners treat their animal friends as family members. They even allow their pets to sleep in their beds at night. But is it OK to share your bed with a pet? Here, Susie and Jacob are talking about the topic.

Jacob: You look very tired today. Didn¡¯t you get a good night¡¯s sleep?

Susie: I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn¡¯t go back to sleep until around 4 am.

Jacob: Was your room too hot to sleep? Or are you suffering from insomnia?

Susie: No, my pet cat Nabi woke me up. She is usually active at night. She wanted to play with me so she kept crying until I got up.

Jacob: I had a similar experience. One day, my pet dog barked all through the night to wake me up. He wanted to play with me. He even licked my face and hands to wake me up. It was so annoying.

Susie: I love Nabi so much, but sometimes she is annoying at night.

Jacob: Then, you should not allow her to sleep in your room. My mom says sleeping with a pet can disturb our sleep. This is because dogs and cats have different sleeping patterns.

Susie: Yes, that¡¯s true. Nabi often disturbs my sleep. The other night, she even wetted my bed and I had to change my sheet in the middle of the night! The next day, I was late for school because I was so tired.

Jacob: It took a few months, but I managed to train my dog to sleep in the living room. You should train your cat, too.

Susie: Yes, I guess I should do that, too. It is important to get a good night¡¯s sleep. I don¡¯t want my pet to disturb my sleep anymore!
