According to the Cambridge
dictionary, ¡®tundra¡¯ describes very large areas
of land found in Northern Asia, North America, and Northern Europe.
They are very cold, windy, and barren places. There are
only two seasons in these regions - winter and summer.
Winters are long and summers are very short.
In fact, the ground below the surface of the tundra is
frozen all year around. In the winter,
the temperature drops to -50 degrees and even the top layer of soil freezes! In the summer, the
temperature ranges from 3 to 12 degrees. During the summer months,
these regions receive about 15-25 centimeters of rain. However, due to the cold average temperature, trees
do not grow there - only grass and moss can survive the harsh climate.
As a matter of fact, tundra regions are like cold deserts. The word tundra
means ¡°treeless mountain tract¡± in Russian.
There are three types of tundra: Arctic tundra, Alpine tundra, and Antarctic tundra. You can
find some animals in these regions such as arctic foxes, polar bears, lemmings, and snowy owls. |
