Scientists Discover 208 New Species
Untitled Document
Many of Earth¡¯s animal species are endangered and nearing extinction. Plenty have disappeared. However, scientists continue to find new species every day. Scientists in Southeast Asia recently discovered 208 new species. The scientists based their studies in the Mekong River region.
A psychedelic gecko and a monkey with a unique hairstyle were among the many species that were found. The gecko was found in southern Vietnam. The nose-less monkey with a ¡¯70s hairdo was found in an isolated region in Myanmar. All the animals live in a biologically diverse region. Sadly, this area is threatened by habitat loss, deforestation, climate change and overdevelopment, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)¼¼°è¾ß»ý»ý¹°±â±Ý.

¡°While many of these species are new to science, the local people of Myanmar know them well,¡± wrote WWF in its report. The group said that this part of Southeast Asia is home to some of the world¡¯s most endangered species like tigers, Asian elephants, the Mekong dolphins and Mekong giant catfish.
The Mekong is a river that runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. With the new finding in Southeast Asia, we should now be more conscious of protecting our environment.
