How Much Did Dinosaurs Really Weigh?

The
Earth was once ruled by gigantic dinosaurs. Some of them were
extremely huge and heavy.
In many movies, including Jurassic Park,
dinosaurs are portrayed as fearsome creatures with tremendously heavy bodies
and thundering footsteps.
However, scientists at the University of Manchester have found that
dinosaurs were much lighter than was previously thought. In their
new study, they used laser technology to calculate their body mass. They produced
a formula to accurately calculate the
animals¡¯ dimensions.
¡°It
is surprisingly difficult to
know how much fossilized animals weighed.
Our method provides a much more
accurate measure. It shows that dinosaurs
are not as big as previously thought,¡± said Dr. Bill Sellers, who
led the study. ¡°We found a Brachiosaur, estimated to be as heavy
as 80 tons, would actually have weighed 23
tons.¡±
The researchers used living mammals to determine the minimum amount of skin required to wrap around an average skeleton. Then, they applied
the method to a Brachiosaur skeleton at a museum in Berlin. They found
that when the dinosaur was alive, it weighed 23 tons.
¡°Our study shows that these animals were much lighter than traditionally thought,¡±
said Dr. Sellers. The researchers plan to apply the technique to the
skeletons of other extinct animals. |
