Korea Faces Water Shortage
Untitled Document
All living things need water to survive. We must use water wisely because the world is running out of this precious resource. Millions of people around the world do not have access to clean water. However, getting water is very easy in Korea.
We can go to a supermarket and buy bottled water. Or we can go to our kitchens or bathrooms and get water from the tap. In fact, according to a government report, Koreans use too much water. Koreans use more water than other foreign countries with large populations. If this continues, Korea will face a water shortage.

In terms of the total amount of water used per person, Korea ranked 129th in the world. As a result, Korea is categorized as a country with a water shortage. Although Korea is running out of water, Koreans do not feel this shortage in their daily lives.
This is because the country imports water in the form of ¡°virtual water.¡± The volume of virtual water Korea imports is about 42 billion cubic meters per year. This makes Korea the sixth-largest water consumer in the world, after Japan, Mexico, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
