Less Salt, Please!
Untitled Document
In most foods we love, there are some ingredients we can¡¯t see. For example, you can¡¯t see the sugar in your coke. You can¡¯t see the salt in your pizza, either. Well, doctors say such invisible ingredients are something we must be very careful about. This week, I want to talk about the dangers of salt.

Sometimes, salt can be easily seen. You can see it on pretzels. You can taste it on French fries, too. But doctors say 75 percent of the salt we eat is hidden in foods. Yes, that means you can¡¯t see it.

Salt is something we need every day. The nerve system in our body needs a chemical called sodium. And sodium is in salt. But we only need small amounts. It¡¯s hard to believe, but the amount of salt we eat is about five times more than what we really need!

Since our taste buds are used to salty foods, we think food is not tasty when there isn¡¯t much salt in it. Think about eating fries that are not salty! It would really taste funny. Salt surely makes our foods taste great. The problem is, taking too much salt can cause health problems.

Doctors say too much salt can damage your heart. So, what should you do? It¡¯s simple. Eat less salt. Since salt is almost in every meal, ask your mom to cook you foods with less salt. If you start doing this now, you can take good care of your heart.

At first, less salty foods may not taste as good. But within only a few weeks, you will get used to it. Remember, kids! Less salt means a stronger heart!
