Taiwan
is a state in East Asia. It is
bordered by China to the
west, Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south.
Taipei is the capital city. It is also
the capital of Asian art and culture. Taiwan has the 19th largest
economy in the world.
Taiwan is a small country. It is slightly larger than Belgium.
The land mass of Taiwanese islands
are only about the size of Massachusetts in the U.S.
However, the country is home to some of the greatest museums in Asia. The most
famous museum in Taiwan is
the National Museum of World Prehistory.
The island is also called ¡°Formosa.¡± It means beautiful in Portuguese. The name was
given by the Portuguese in the 16th century when they first saw
the country. Taiwan has the highest mountain in all of southeast Asia,
which is nearly 4,000 meters tall.
Taiwan is well-known for its films in the world. Baseball is the national
sport in Taiwan. The country participates in the Olympics every year.
