The Republic of Yemen is a country in Western Asia. It is located on the Arabian Peninsula. It has more than 200 islands. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, and Oman to the east. Yemen is the only republic in the Middle East - the others are kingdoms or emirates. More children are born in Yemen than in any other Middle Eastern country every year.

Yemen is the poorest country in the Arab world. It doesn¡¯t have many natural resources. But in ancient times, Yemen was a rich nation. It used to trade in frankincense, myrrh, and spices. Mocha originated from Yemen.

Sana¡¯a is the capital and largest city in Yemen. The country has a population of over 25 million people. The official religion of Yemen is Islam. About 53 percent of Yemenis are Sunnis, while 45 percent are Shias.

The most popular sport in Yemen is soccer. Arabic is the country¡¯s official language. The country was divided in two until its unification. North Yemen and South Yemen became one country in 1990.
