Facebook
is one of the most popular social networking websites.
It is used by a large number of people
all over the world. Facebook helps us keep in touch with our friends
and family members anytime, anywhere. We can also share ideas and
useful information with them. However,
a school in Australia banned students under 13
from using Facebook.
Recently, the principal of Harlaxton State
School in Queensland warned parents that she will
expel students under 13 who
do not delete their Facebook accounts. This is
because the social networking service (SNS) is often used to bully peers among young students.
Under Facebook guidelines, users must be at least 13 years old to
set up an account.
¡°In order to curb widespread cyber bullying,
I won¡¯t allow students under 13 to
have Facebook accounts,¡± said Leonie Hultgren, the principal of the
school. ¡°There has been some considerable Facebook traffic that either bullies
a child of this school or in some cases speak ill of some staff and the school.¡±
Ms. Hultgren even wrote a letter to the parents to let them know the
negative aspects of using Facebook.
¡°Parents, you are your child¡¯s first teachers. What do you want
them to learn? We need to teach our students about respect and healthy relationships. However, Facebook
is often used for cyber bullying,¡± she wrote. ¡°Children frequently lied about their
age to set up a Facebook account, but any students who did so would
be expelled if discovered.¡±
The state¡¯s education officials support her idea, while lawyers question whether schools
have the authority to issue a ban on social media.
What do you think about the ban? |
