Recently,
the Ministry of Health and Welfareº¸°Çº¹ÁöºÎ announced that it will come up with measures to reduce the sodium intake of Korean people by
20 percent by the year 2020. It will also encourage processed food companies
and restaurants to use less salt in their food. Koreans often enjoy
eating salty food.
The average Korean intakes 4,878
milligrams of sodium per day, which is 2.4 times higher than the recommended amount by the WHO¼¼°èº¸°Ç±â±¸.
In fact, most Korean food contains a lot of salt or
salty food additives in it.
For example, stews and soups are usually seasoned with salt
or food additives, and a typical Korean meal is comprised
of a stew or soup with other salty side dishes. Instant noodles and cold noodles also contain
a lot of salt.
The human body needs sodium to stay healthy and maintain life, so eating
salt is important. However, eating too much salt can cause many health problems,
including high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
About a third of all Korean adults suffer from high blood pressure.
salt can also weaken your bones because it eliminates calcium from bones. The Ministry
of Health and Welfare recommends that people drink a glass of milk
after meals. According to health experts, milk dilutes sodium and helps
release sodium from the body. |
