On
July 11, NASA scientists in the U.S. said
they have found a fifth moon orbiting Pluto. They spotted the moon using the
Hubble telescope, which was
launched in 1990. According to the scientists, the irregular-shaped moon is
called ¡°S/2012¡± or ¡°P5.¡± The fourth moon ¡°P4¡± was discovered almost exactly one year ago.
P5 is the smallest of Pluto¡¯s satellites. It is between
10 to 24 kilometers in diameter. Pluto¡¯s largest
moon, Charon, is 1,043 kilometers across.
It was
discovered in 1978. The other two, Nix and Hydra range between 32
to 113 kilometers wide. They were discovered by the Hubble telescope
in 2005.
P4 is thought to be 13 to 34 kilometers across. For comparison, Earth¡¯s moon
is roughly 3,460 kilometers
wide.
Pluto was once known as the ninth planet from the Sun. However,
it was declassified as a planet in August, 2006. Now it is classified
as a dwarf planet. |
