Africa
is a huge continent. It is the second largest continent
in the world after Asia. It covers 20.3 percent of the
total land area on Earth. Over 800 million people live in Africa.
There are 56 countries in the black continent. So, what is the biggest
country in Africa?
Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is located in Northern
Africa. Actually, Sudan is the 10th largest country in the world.
It is 10 times the size of England.
The country shares borders with 9 other countries
including Egypt, Ethiopia,
Kenya, and Uganda.

Sudan¡¯s largest city is its capital, Khartoum. It is
the 54th largest city in the world. The population of Sudan is about
20 million. About 70 percent of the population are Muslims. Sudan gained independence
from England on January 1, 1956. The official languages of Sudan
are Arabic and English. Over
135 native languages are also
spoken there. I bet they need a lot of translaters.
The Rainy season in Sudan lasts for about 3 months
from July to September in the North, and up to 6 months from June
to November in the South. In the past, the major products
for export were cotton and oil seeds. But now it is
exporting more oil to many countries. In fact, Sudan is the 7th
largest oil producer in Africa. Neverthless
they don't seem to be a very rich country.

Since 1991, Sudan¡¯s education
system has included 2 years of pre-school, 8 years of elementary
school, and 3 years of secondary school.
Sadly, many young children
are dying of preventable diseases in Sudan every year.
Africa is very huge but the countries are still very underdeveloped
and many people live in poverty there. |
