The Number of Students Declines
Untitled Document
How many classmates do you have in your class? A good guess would be that there are around 30 students in your class. However, according to a report released on November 26 by Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education¼¿ï½Ã±³À°Ã», the number of elementary school students per class dropped again this year.

Education experts say this is mainly due to the nation¡¯s low birthrate. It seems that the adverse effects of the low birthrate continue to appear year after year. This year saw an average of 27.8 students per class, which is 1.1 students less compared to last year. Since 2000, the number of elementary school students has steadily decreased. The number of students per class was 37.3 in 1999; now there is a difference of almost 10 students.
Effects have appeared in secondary schools as well, which have also seen an overall decline in the number of the students. Therefore, steps need to be taken before this leads to more serious problems throughout the nation.
