Wilcox County High School Celebrates 1st Integrated Prom  (14-05-2013).

Black and white students at Wilcox County High School in Georgia have attended classes together but have had two separate proms for decades. A prom in the United States is a formal dance party held for high school students, usually in their final year. A racially segregated prom has been the practice since the school was founded about 40 years ago.

However, the seniors at Wilcox County High School have recently held an integrated prom for the first time ever. Thanks to a group of students taking a strong stance against racism in the school, which had come under fire from local citizens, the school has finally been able to tear down racial barriers among its students.

In fact, the separated prom was never organized by the school. Two organizing committees - one for white students and one for black students - have held the prom respectively and independently despite state law prohibiting racial segregation. That is why this racist practice has been continued for so long.

Still, some school officials and a number of parents of white students are showing lukewarm reactions to the integrated prom, and prefer the segregated prom as they did before. On the other hand, the students are hoping that people will cast away the prejudices that led to a segregated prom, and that there is no talk about racism ever again, at least among young students.
